We’re going to end up building virtual mainframes out of liquid cooled PC’s connected to virtual disk. Hmmm. what will we call them? 3080′s, 43×1′s, yikes!

The last great water cooled S390 machines were in fact not IBM at all, but Hitachi (Hitachi Skyline Trinium).
IBM abandoned water for air with the 9672 (around the time of Lou Gerstner). They started with just air cooling, then went for refrigeration and now the circle is complete….
For that matter, 43x1s (such as the great 4381) were also air cooled.
